This has proven to be so successful that we are now running it in the KS2 hall every Thursday morning. Please come along and join us. Have a cup of tea and enjoy reading a book with your child.
Table Tennis Success
The table tennis team were back at ALNS recently, this time for the Portsmouth Schools singles tournament. All seven of the boys and girls progressed out of their groups and into the knockout phase, a superb achievement considering they only had 2 practice sessions. In the girl’s section, Isabelle and Daria won through to make it an all-Copnor final, with Daria taking the title of Portsmouth Schools’ champion. Both girls are invited to the regional final in February. Congratulations to all of the players for a successful tournament.
Repeat of Reading Workshops
We’ve had some requests to re-run the workshops that we held on 21st January as some people couldn’t attend. As a result, we ‘re going to run a “catch-up” session for parents of all year groups directly after school on 27th February. This will run from about 15:20 to 16:00.
Please let the office know if you wish to attend so we can gauge which room to hold this in.
Y4 Sayers Croft Residential Visit
Sixty-seven Year 4 children went to Sayers Croft for 3 nights last week and had a terrific time. Activities included: a low ropes course; bouldering; a blindfolded course; orienteering; building a shelter; a 3hr walk in the countryside; an earth walk; nature art and a visit to a Saxon house.
They got stuck into every activity with relish, and demonstrated great collaboration and resilience. They also showed independence, being able to quickly get dressed and ready for each activity and they particularly enjoyed the twice daily room inspections – the staff were impressed with how tidy they were!
Everybody enjoyed themselves and came back tired and muddy. Many fabulous memories have been made. The Sayers Croft staff commented on how polite and well behaved the children were and how they quickly got stuck into every activity. We are all very proud of them. Well done to all involved.
We’re also lucky in this case, as everybody who attended has permission to share photos on the website. As a result we are going to put a blog on the website so that you can see what they were all up to!!! J
Chichester Festival Theatre Visit
On 21st January fifteen children visited to watch a children’s concert. They listened to a full orchestra and one of the children was even given the opportunity to conduct them! A magician dazzled the children and at the end the children joined in with a song, complete with actions, with the 500 children in the theatre making enough noise for 2000!
We would really appreciate if any more parents could volunteer to read with the children. If you are able to spare the odd hour during the week we would be so grateful. If you think you can help, then please leave your details with the office and we will get back to you.
Quiz Evening – 19th March
A group of our more-able children are working with Miss Shackelford to design a Quiz Evening for parents. More details will follow shortly, but please put aside some time in your calendar to come along and support this. At the same time you can enjoy beating the governors’ team and the staff team!! J
Author Visit in Year 1 and 2
On Thursday, 6th February Timothy Knapman will be visiting the children to talk about his books. There will be an opportunity for children to purchase a book and have it signed by him. He’ll also spend time with each group telling them about his writing process and what inspires him to write! A letter has been sent to parents by email. We’re looking forward to his visit!
Year 1 Picture Book Award
Year 1 will be taking part in the Picture Book Award which is run by Portsmouth School Library Service. This year we have four titles for the children to read. If your child brings an extra picture book home, with a School Library Service sticker on the cover, please enjoy it with them, and then send it back to school so that it can be passed onto the next child to take home. The children will vote for their favourite, once everyone in the year group has read all four books. The winning book will be announced later in the year.
Year 5 Shorter Novel Award
Year 5 will be taking part in the Shorter Novel Award which is run by Portsmouth School Library Service. There are four novels to read this year, and the children will read, or have read to them, all four books. They will then vote for their favourite. The results are collected from all the schools in Portsmouth that take part and a celebration event is held at the Kings Theatre in late June, where the winning book is announced. This award encourages the children to read a wider range of fiction by authors they may not have encountered before, thus giving them a wider knowledge of books and authors to look for when they visit the library to change their books.
Before & After School
For health and safety reasons children must be supervised by parents/carers at all times when in the school playground before and after school. Please may we also remind you that the MUGA pitch is out of bounds at these times. We thank you in advance for helping us with this.
We’ve noticed that several children are wearing trainers to school. Please can you ensure children come to school wearing black school shoes.
