March Newsletter

5th March

Dear Parents/Carers,

Japanese Visitors

We are lucky to have 18 Japanese university students this week who will be working with some of our children creating a game called Karuta. A similar group visited us last year and the children loved working with them. It’s a great chance for our children to learn about another culture and I’m sure if your child is lucky enough to be involved you will hear all about it.

Year 6 SATs Revision

It’s coming to that time of year again. Thank you to those parents who attended our parents’ meeting about these. If you didn’t have the chance to do this, but would still like to purchase any revision books for your child to use at home, please contact the office for further information. We try not to make too much of a fuss of these tests, but they are important in the sense that the secondary school use the results to help group the children next year, so anything you can do to help your child in the lead up to these will be really useful.

When children show that they are following one of our school learning values, they may be given one of the animals to look after. Each class has a set of the five animals and it is lovely to see them sitting on the tables or being carried around the school. The animals help children to remember the values and to think about them throughout each day.

Water Bottles
We’ve noticed that a number of children do not regularly bring their water bottles in to class and we would encourage them to bring these in daily so they remain hydrated.  Unfortunately we are unable to provide cups for them to drink from.  If you no longer have the water bottle provided by the school you can purchase these from Hargreaves and Penelope Anne.

Asthma Inhalers
If your child is an asthma sufferer, please can we remind you to make sure all inhalers and spacers are taken home at the end of every term to be cleaned and checked to ensure they are in date and contain sufficient medication. Please do remember to return these at the start of the new term.

Medicine
Due to limited space we are unable to keep medicines in school for children long term, unless they have a specific medical condition requiring ongoing treatment. Please ensure you collect your child’s medication at the end of the day on a daily basis if this is not the case.  This also enables us to check that they should still be receiving the medication and update the forms accordingly.

Sporting Success
The Girls’ football team continue to do well. They made a valiant effort in defending the Portsmouth Cup, falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat in the semi-finals this week. Their league fixtures start next week and they also have their Hampshire Cup semi-final to prepare for before Easter too.

During February, Dylan, Haidyn, George, Lucas, Oli and Freya represented Copnor at the Portsmouth Table tennis Tournament.    They all played incredibly well in hard-fought, close matches.  Many of the boys lost to the children who ended up competing in the finals.  George took the eventual winner of the tournament to a deciding set in the quarter finals, whilst Oli lost a close-fought semi-final 2 sets to 1.  Freya, meanwhile won the girls' tournament, remaining undefeated through the entire competition!   Freya then went on to represent Portsmouth in the Hampshire finals, reaching the quarter finals before defeat.

The Year 3/ 4 Gym team will be looking to defend the Portsmouth Cup they won last year at the Portsmouth Gym Centre in two weeks’ time and we wish them well.

Parents’ Evenings
Thank you to everyone who attended these. If, for any reason, you weren’t able to attend we will try to contact you to see if we can arrange an alternative time.
